What metadata does an iPhone embed?
When you take a photo on an iPhone, iOS automatically writes a block of EXIF metadata into the file. This is not optional โ it happens for every photo, in every app, unless you explicitly disable location access.
GPS coordinates
Latitude and longitude to within a few metres of where the photo was taken
Device model
iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 14, etc. โ exact model string
iOS version
The version of iOS running at the time of capture
Date & time
Exact timestamp, including timezone
Camera settings
Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, flash
Lens info
Which lens was used on dual/triple camera iPhones
Real risk: A photo posted on social media with GPS intact can reveal your home address. Even if the platform strips metadata before displaying it, the original file may have been read โ and some platforms don't strip it at all from downloads.
HEIC vs JPEG on iPhone
Since iOS 11, iPhones default to saving photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container). HEIC files are roughly half the size of equivalent JPEGs at the same quality. Both formats embed the same EXIF metadata block.
When you AirDrop or share photos to non-Apple devices, iOS can automatically convert HEIC to JPEG โ but the metadata is preserved in both cases. The format changes; the GPS data does not.
Does the native iOS share sheet remove metadata?
iOS has a built-in option to strip location before sharing. When you tap Share โ select a destination โ you may see "Options" at the top of the share sheet. Tapping it reveals a toggle: "Location" โ turn it off to exclude GPS.
However, this only removes GPS. Camera model, device info, iOS version, shooting settings and timestamps are still embedded. For a complete clean, you need a dedicated tool.

How to remove all metadata from iPhone photos
Transfer the photo to a browser
AirDrop to your Mac, or use iCloud โ open your phone's browser and go to RemoveMD. You can upload HEIC files directly.
Upload and process
Drop the HEIC or JPEG file. RemoveMD strips all EXIF data in memory and returns a clean JPEG. No account required.
Download and share
The cleaned file downloads to your device. Share it wherever you like โ no metadata attached.
Remove metadata from your iPhone photos
Supports HEIC and JPEG โ free, no account needed.
